There are some opportunities for Boy Scouts pursuing merit badges and/or Cub Scouts pursuing belt loops and Webelos activity pins related to science (energy, electricity, science, computers, etc.) contained in it, though, so I hope it will be of interest and acceptable to all. We always like to see those kids advance!! Here at Texas Tech University we are planning to have a local commemoration next Tuesday evening, Sep. 9, from 7 to 9 pm in Science lecture room 7 on the TTU campus a few hours before the first planned circulation of a complete proton beam in the newly constructed Large Hadron Collider at the CERN high energy physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. This is a major event that will be commemorated all over the world for those involved in this type of science. TTU, comprising the research group to which I belong as an Adjunct Professor, and also the High Performance Computing Center in which I work, is participating actively and extensively in the experiments at the LHC. We plan to use the data from this machine to look for new particles and to study the science resulting from these experiments, especially science related to energy and mass. We have several scientists involved. We have been very active in planning associated local and US festivities, which are summarized on the US LHC first-beam page at http://www.uslhc.us/first_beam including a link to our own first-beam event page at http://highenergy.phys.ttu.edu/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=91&Itemid=81 Since this is intended to be a public event, we would like to invite you as well as local high school or junior high science teachers you may know and their classes, and any other interested people to attend. The event will be held in Science lecture room 7 on the main campus, located on the West side of Memorial Circle, familiar to many as the location of the choir during most Carol of Lights Christmas lighting ceremonies held at TTU. An announcement should be made shortly by TTU, but since this may be drowned by other local news, we wanted to extend this special invitation. (If you are planning to bring a group larger than 20, please RSVP to Patti Shelton at 806-742-3767; otherwise, just come.) We will begin with an open house at 7 pm, followed by a public talk by Dr. Richard Wigmans of the High Energy Physics group at 8 pm, along with some remarks by other TTU officials. The open house will consist of in-person demonstrations and displays by TTU scientists using computers and displays specially set up for this purpose. Light refreshments and handoouts will be available. The evening will conclude with showing of a 20-minute movie about the experiments and equipment we use at the LHC. I would appreciate it very much if you were to distribute this, if it is of interest, and look forward to seeing as many of you who would like to come next week Tuesday evening, Sep. 9. at 7 pm at TTU. Please note the time change: the session will run from 6:30 to 9:00 pm and is recommended for ALL Cub and Boy Scout leaders who have not yet had the introductory NLE training. This means you! (If you have not had this training within the past 2 years.) Also as a reminder, the Leader Specific training for Pack and Troop Committee members, cubmasters, etc. is currently scheduled for this Thursday, Sep. 25, or as an alternate date, Oct 23 2008, all at Forrest Heights United Methodist Church at 3007 33rd St from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. You only need to go to one of these Leader Specific dates. This training goes beyond NLE to give you the training you need specific to your position. There is a combined "Super Saturday" training scheduled 8:30 am - 2:20 pm October 25 that covers both New Leader Essentials and Leader Specific training that can be used as an alternative to the above dates. Either way, what you need is one New Leader Essentials session and the Leader Specific session for your position. Pre-register at the Scout office or by e-mail to Fritz at the address in the attached Oct. 23 flyer for any of these dates. Whichever of the above options you choose, please DO choose to become a trained leader and earn the patch that goes on the sleeve of your adult Scout shirt to show this. Each and every one of our scouts deserves trained leadership, and this is the best way for you to inherit the nearly 100 years of experience that Scouting has to offer for you to bring quality programs to the youth of our District and Council.
