There are two questions that keep coming up: 1.? Can there be more than one sponsor for the door hangers?? YES!? This is something that was suggested last year and we did try, but after much pounding of the payment only came up with one.? How is the sponsor(s) acknowledged on the hangers?? Depending on how many sponsors there are dictates how it is laid out, but all sponsors shall be listed on the back of the door hanger.?All listed as "Proud Sponsors of Scouting for Food".? We work closely with the sponsor(s) so they approve, and all art work is approved through the council to be sure we are following National rules and guidelines.? Second - We have a Scouter who owns a printing company - Sarchet Printing Company in Shallowater who has graciously agreed to do the door hangers for a total of $2100 - color on both sides with the size being 4.25" x 11" which is slightly larger than last years.? PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE DATE CHANGE!!!?? Door hangers need to be put out the weekend after Thanksgiving (whatever day?works best for your unit), and final bags of food are to be picked up on Saturday, Dec. 6th.? This is a week earlier than originally planned.? 2.? NO BAGS THIS YEAR!? We are only putting out door hangers this year.? The hangers?have been re-designed and hopefully are even more effective.? Each unit will be given an allotted amount of door hangers - not necessarily enough to cover your whole area, but a portion of the total being printed.? If you find this year that your unit could have used more than you were given, it is imperative that you so note that on the survey that I have you fill out when you drop off your food at the drop-off location.? Next year, I will make sure you have more. 3.? The largest complaint that we had last year is that neighbors put out food and it wasn't picked up.? So please - even if you don't get to put out a hanger in your entire area, please drive the streets of your assigned area and check for food.? Currently, the food bank is out of food, so every can we collect will be greatly appreciated. 4.? Please plan on picking up food between 9am - 11am and dropping off the food off by noon on Saturday, Dec. 6th. 5.? DOOR HANGERS - We will have the majority (if not all) door hangers available to hand out to units THIS SATURDAY AT POPCORN PICK UP TIME.? If the person picking?up your hangers Saturday is not your Scouting for Food person, please be sure that person communicates that they have picked them up.? For those who do not get to pick up on Saturday, we will coordinate with you to get the hangers to you. 6.? DROP OFF LOCATIONS - We will have 3 drop off locations this year.? Location A is Academy at 19th & West Loop.? Location B is Sutherlands at 50th & Memphis.? Location C is the main food bank location at United on 82nd & Frankford.? Some units drop off location has changed.?Please be?aware of your drop off location.? 7.? UNIT ASSIGNMENTS - Below is a list of all units, their assigned area, and their assigned drop off location.? A few changes were made this year and those units were contacted.? If you were not contacted, then your unit's assignment is the same as last year.? If your unit is NOT listed below, please contact me directly and I will assign your unit an area.? We have several unassigned areas.? The Google map that shows each area will be available within the next couple of days at www.chaparraldistrict.org (scroll to the bottom, under the title Scouting For Food).? Click on the link "2008 map of unit assignments", and it will take you to the map.? On Saturday, when you pick up your hangers, a letter of information and a map of your area will be included. Lastly, PLEASE REMEMBER WHY WE DO THIS.? This is an excellent service to our community.? It is a time to let our scouts participate in something that will help a person, a family from going hungry not only this holiday season, but for months to come.? The food we collected last year, helped the food bank till March of this year - that is a lot of food!? Let's see if we can't collect enough to help them through May of next year!? One of the many, many things that the food bank does each year is distribute approximately 5,000 special Christmas boxes to those in our community who need a helping hand and without our efforts - a gap is left open.? For the last two years we have collected close to 60,000 pounds of food each year.? That feeds many a hungry child and I thank each and every one of you for your efforts and your kindness.? Each one of us have many things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving and one of my blessings is being involved in an organization who cares so much about their community.? You are a wonderful family. Almost all units have received their door hangers from me - still have a couple that I am working with to get them theirs.? I DO have some extra hangers so if your unit needs more, feel free to contact me and I'll get them to you.? I'll be available this Saturday and Sunday and anytime next week so I can bring you some on the spot if you need them.? I have heard from many units and it is spread across the board - some are putting the hangers out Saturday, some Sunday and some throughout the week next week.? Again - I appreciate your efforts.? We'll begin our pubilicity of this event next week so be watching the t.v. stations and listening to the radio stations.? ? Final details of the food drive for Saturday, December 6th will be sent out sometime this weekend.? For now - I have a turkey to get ready for my Thanksgiving! Hope each and every one of you have a very Happy Thanksgiving! Downturns in the economy have certainly affected almost everyone, but are especially hard on those who are near the edge of what they can do. Food banks throughout the country have all seen this first-hand: the number of people who need their help has risen at the same time as donations and food available have been dropping steadily. We have placed a couple of links to stories from the news media that document this on the Chaparral District web site at http://chaparraldistrict.org along with other information about Scouting for Food that we think will be helpful. The good news this year is that door hangers are available to all scouting units at no cost thanks to donations that have been raised, with a great design by our coordinator Shelly Walraven. (Please contact her if you have not received those for your unit yet.) There is also a set of both online and printable maps to show your area, and we will be happy to provide your unit with a custom map subdivided into blocks or streets by patrol or den for your unit upon request if you like, if you will just tell us how you want your area subdivided. The door hangers should go out any time beginning tomorrow (Sat. Nov. 29) as convenient for your unit, with food donation pickup to occur next week Saturday Dec. 6 in the morning, to be taken to the designated dropoff point for your area as indicated on the maps. Shelly has got it all organized so that all you have to do is do your part. This is really the time to step forward and show your youth how they can make a difference in the world with just a little bit of effort, and do it with pride.
